Hidden away down winding lanes in the Surrey countryside and yet only a 15 minute drive from Croydon, The White Bear at Fickleshole is a charming historic inn that’s perfect for people who are looking to escape to the country.
With our large pub garden and plenty of car parking, it’s no surprise that people flock here with their friends and families when the sun shines – but, as well as great food and drink, did you know that there are also excellent walking routes and cycling opportunities in the area too?
Enjoy a circular walk over the North Downs, a stroll from our sister inn Botley Hill Farmhouse or hit the paths from the village of Warlingham to The White Bear.
If you prefer to get on your bike, the Surrey Hills is heaven for keen cyclists with its challenging hills and sweeping lanes. You don’t have to be a professional road cyclist or mountain biker to enjoy them though, and we have a selection of recommended routes for various riding levels here.
You’ll also find some of England’s finest historic houses only a short drive away, including Chartwell, the former home of Sir Winston Churchill; Hever Castle & Gardens, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn; and Down House, the family home of world-renowned scientist Charles Darwin.
With fantastic Titsey Estate walks on the doorstep, you may never want to leave the area. As an added bonus, our garden is a great viewing point for the aerial acrobatics at Biggin Hill’s world-famous Festival of Flight celebrations on Saturday August 17 and Sunday August 18.
On sunny weekends at The White Bear, if you’re looking to dine al fresco, our Burger Shack complements the usual food and drink menu offering inside our country inn. Here you can enjoy our Titsey Estate Beef Burger, Grilled Chicken Burger, Titsey Estate Lamb Burger or Mushroom Burger, as well as delicious salads and a selection of freshly prepared sandwiches.
As for refreshments, well our selection of real ales and lagers, which usually includes at least one offering from the local Titsey Brewing Co, handpicked selection of wines and soft drinks should do the trick.
Or, why not check out our ever growing gin list? Currently, we have Bombay Sapphire, Dockyard Gin, Adnams Copper House Gin, Sharish Gin, Bathtub Gin, Gordon’s Pink Gin, Brighton Gin and Silent Pool, which is made here in Surrey.
All gins are served on ice with a recommended garnish (please just ask if you’d prefer them without) and all our tonics are by Fever-Tree. There’s not much that beats a perfectly poured gin and tonic in an English pub garden on a sunny summer’s day, is there?
Whether you’re coming here by car, bike, horse or on foot, we look forward to welcoming you to our charming 16th century inn this summer. See you soon!
